California Penal Code 487A
Grand Carcass Theft is a subdivision of the California Penal Code 487. In this instance, the goods stolen are certain livestock and food, which exceeds the value of $250.
In subdivision California Penal Code Section 487A, theft of agricultural products, or livestock (e.g. hogs, mules, horses, avocados, fruit etc.) valued at over $250, is considered to be grand theft. In other words it falls under the same umbrella and punishments as grand theft.
In order to prosecute for CPC 487A, the state has the burden to prove you are guilty of theft of livestock and agriculture valued over $250. In other words, they would need to be prepared to provide evidence that you:
- took livestock or agriculture owned by someone else
- took the livestock or agriculture without the owner’s consent
- moved the livestock or agriculture and kept it for any period of time

Lisa and her boyfriend Ted are driving back to Orange County from San Francisco. As they drive down Pacific Coast Highway, Ted notices some roaming cattle.Having never seen a cow in his life, he pulls his truck to the side of the road get out and has a look. Ted notices a young calf wandering by itself and has the sudden urge to take it. He grabs the young calf, puts it in the back of his truck bed, and drives off. Three miles down the road a local officer pulls Ted over and arrests him for violating California penal code 487a.
